#1011: Is It Permissible To Give Zakaatu Al-Fitr With Money?
“Assalaamu alaykum Warahmatullah Wabarakaatuh. Please is it permissible to give out money value for Zakaatu Al-Fitr? ”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salam Warahmatullah Wabarakaatuh.
Alhamdulillah
On this matter, the Majority of the Fuqahaa held that it is not permissible to give other than the mostly consumed food of the People in that land. It was the position of Maalik, Ash-Shaafi’i and Ahmad.
Abu Hanifah rahimahullah held that it were permissible. He felt that the essence of the Zakaatu Al-Fitr is making the needs of the needy taken care of and making him happy on the Day of Id. Shaykyu Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah supported this permissibility if it can be proven that truly, giving money to that poor Man is better and more beloved to him than the raw food.
The majority responded by saying that this was never the practice of the Rasul salallahu alayhi wasallam nor that of the predecessors after him. Were this to be permissible, It would have been practiced in their eras.
The position of the majority is that which is right.
