#1025: On Praying The Witr In Congregation Outside Ramadān
Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah Wa barakatuhCan witr be performed in congregation outside Ramadan?
ANSWER:
Wa’alaikumus Salamu Warahmatullah Wabarakatuh.
Praise be to Allah.
Praying the Witr in congregation is permissible in Ramadan and outside Ramadan, because there is no any evidence to prove it’s prohibition outside Ramadan.
For indeed, praying the witr or any of the nawāfil (voluntary prayers) individually or in congregation is permissible, since both practice have been reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
Imām Bukhāri reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) once led Anas, his mother and an orphan in a voluntary prayer in their home. In the commentary of this hadith, Amīrus-San’ānī in Subulus-Salām stated that:
“This hadīth proves the permissibility of praying the nawāfil in congregation.”
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was also reported to have led Ibn Abbās in his night prayer.
However, in most cases, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed the voluntary prayers individually.
For this reason, Ibn Bāz amongst other scholars disliked performing the voluntary prayers in congregation on a regular basis, that is it should not be made a custom where the congregation is going to be daily, weekly or monthly except for during Ramadan.
And Allah knows best.
Barakallahu Fikum
Jazakumullahu Khairan.
