#1036: Was The Renown Hajjaaj Responsible For Sectioning The Qur’an As We Have It Today?

The present way of sectioning the Qur’an into hizb, Juzu, was only introduced by Al-Hajjaj. And there is nothing wrong in also making use of it for one’s daily sectioning. Pls which of the hajjaj?

The sectioning of the Quran into 30 Juzu which comprises of 60 hizb was implemented by the Nasr bn Aassim and Yahya bn Ya’mar who were both reputable scholars among the taabi’een. And this was done around 694 AH under the supervision of the then governor of Iraq Abu Muhammad al-Ḥajjaj ibn Yusuf ibn al-Ḥakam ibn ʿAqil al-Thaqafi, known simply as al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf during the reign of Abdulmalik Bn Marwan. The Amir Abdulmalik bn Marwan was the one that requested the project to be implemented in order to ease referencing and to simplify the memorization of the Qur’an amongst the Muslims.

In this sectioning, verses were used as a basis for dividing the Quran into 30 parts. This was unlike in the case of the companions that used the beginning and the end of chapters to section their daily revision of the Quran. There was a clear need for this project in that period because the population of Kufa contained people from almost all Arab tribes and new Muslims from various places and there was need for unifying referencing and simplifying teaching of the Quran and by making it more systematic to the teaming population of the Muslims from diverse background.

And Allah knows best.

Barakallahu Fikum
Jazakumullahu Khayran.
