#1054: As A Woman Involved In The Business Of Pastries, Am I Permitted To Take Orders That Are Meant For Christmas Celebrations?
“As salaam alaikum warahamatullahi wabarakatuh. My question is am a caterer and I make cakes and pastries. Christians patronise me. I make birthday cake, also make cakes and write happy Christmas on it, happy new year’s, Ester and the likes. During some of their church service they order pastries as refreshments. And I also do weddings cakes. This is what I do to make a living. Please is it halal?. Am a woman. And I work from home”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salam Warahmatullah Wabarakaatuh.
Alhamdulillah, may Allah bless your earnings and make you of His Pious Servants that stop at the limits set by Him and do not transgress them, amin.
Know, may Allah bless you and your family, that it is not permissible to execute these kinds of orders that are particularly meant for the celebrations of Christmas and other Kufr Eid Celebrations provided it is particularly meant for that celebration.
And you have mentioned in your question particularly that the requirement from you is to write ‘Happy Christmas’ and the likes on the cakes.
We already established in our response to the Question asked about trading with Christians for Christmas Celebrations (Q. 1049) on our Telegram Channel that it is not permissible to aid the Kuffaar in their Religious Celebrations. And this is because Allah had commanded:
(وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَىٰ ۖ وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ)
“And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression”
Imam Ash-Shaafi’i rahimahullah mentioned in his book Al-Umm that anything that aid the Kuffaar in their celebrations is Haraam without exception.
This position was also strenghten by Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah in Ah’kaamu Ahli Adh-Dhimmah.
In fact, the writing of ‘Merry Christmas’ could be seen as a way of participating with them in their celebrations.
May Allah bless your earnings but know that you earn the Baraka of Allah by avoiding the things He has made Haraam and protecting yourself from the pitfalls of Iblis.
Barakallahu fikum
Jazakumullahu Khayran
