#1072: On Breaking The Fast While Moving (Walking)
Assalamualaikum warahmatullah Ya Amir.
These are my questions Sir.
2. Can someone who’s fasting breaks his/her fast while walking or should reach their destination before breaking the fast. As regard the Haadith of our beloved prophet Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam that teaches us to hurry to break our fast and delay our sahur at dawn.
Allahu aalam.
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salam Warahmatullah Wabarakaatuh.
What is recommended for such a person is to stop, break his fast and then continue his move to his destination so that he complies by both the Sunnah of hastening the breaking of the Fast and also that of the eating habits. If however he is not in a position to pause moving then let him eat what he can while moving. The Ulamaa have agreed on the permissibility of eating while moving or walking.
Imam Abu ‘Isa At-Tirmidhi has recorded from Abdullah bn Umar that he said:
كنا في عهد النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم نأكل ونحن نمشي ، ونشرب ونحن قيام
“We, in the Era of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasallam, used to eat while walking and drink while standing”
The Hadith has been reconciled with Ahaadith that commanded not to drink while standing by stating that drinking while standing is discouraged and it is not Haraam. We have referred to this Ruling in our response to Question 267 on our Telegram Channel, you may refer to it.
