#1102: The Ruling On The Eating Of Termites

“My question: Assalamu alaykum, is it halal to eat termites?”

ANSWER:

Wa Alaykum Salam Warahmatullah Wabarakaatuh.

Alhamdulillah, may Allah illumine my heart and yours amin.

It is an agreement of the Fuqahaa that every animal or living thing that we have been forbidden from killing is Haraam for consumption.

Imaam Abu Zakariyya Yahya An-Nawawi rahimahullah said in the Majmuu’u:

“That which is forbidden to kill is forbidden to eat because if it were permissible to eat, its killing would not have been forbidden… Example in this category is Bees and Ants, they are forbidden for eating”

The Hanbali Imaam ‘Awnuddin Ibn Hubairah mentioned that the Fuqahaa of the four schools are agreed that any insect that crawls the earth is forbidden unless where otherwise stated, that’s the default ruling. He mentioned that only Maalik differed with this, in one of two different Narrations from him, where he held that it was Makruuh.
