#1119: On A Routine Fast That Falls On A Day To Ramadān
Assalamu Alaikum, can I still fast tomorrow being Monday, because am used to Monday and Thursday fasting, but now that Ramadan starts next tomorrow Inn Sha Allahu? Thanks as I await your responses 🙏
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salam Warahmatullah Wabarakaatuh.
There is nothing wrong with fasting tomorrow provided it is a day you fast routinely.
The Hadith that was recorded by Imam Al-Bukhari from ‘Ammaar bn Yaasir – radiyallahu anhu – in the Ta’aaliq form but recorded unbroken to the Rasul salallahu alayhi wasallam by the Recorders of the Sunan reads that the Rasul salallahu alayhi wasallam said:
من صام اليوم الذي يشك فيه، فقد عصى أبا القاسم صلى الله عليه وسلم
“Whomsoever observes the Fast on the Day of doubt has indeed disobeyed Abu Al-Qaasim – salallahu alayhi wasallam”
However, the majority of the Scholars hold that observing its fast is Disliked unless it coincides with a regular fasting day.
The Hanbalis hold that fasting on such a day is obligatory if it is doubtful in the sense that the weather is unclear and the crescent is not cited due to that.
Imam An-Nawawi rahimahullah said in Al-Majmuu’u:
“Al-Khatib said: The Ulamaa of the Salaf are in agreement that to fast on the Day of Doubt is not Obligatory… Until he said: thus majority of the Fuqahaa considered it disliked to fast on its day unless if it’s a routine day of his fast then let him fast it or it is a range of days in which he is fasting then it coincides with this day then he may fast it.”
And the position of the majority is stronger.
Barakallahu fikum
Jazakumullahu Khayran.
