“Assalam Alaykum Waramotullahi WABARAKATUH. Question. Is a female supposed to say out her surahs during tarawhi n nawafil or not?..I mean dt if a female wnt to perform tahajud,is she supposed to recites d surahs loudly or quitely?(she stays alone tho). Jazakumullah khairan as u answer the question”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salam Warahmatullah Wabarakaatuh.
Alhamdulillah.
As for this, the Scholars are on agreement that when a woman is observing the Salaah alone or she is in the company of only her Mahaarim (Men to whom she is not permissible to be married), or her husband, or she is leading other women in Salaah, she is encouraged to observe the audible recitation just as a man would provided her voice isn’t reaching those that may be affected by her voice negatively (Fitnah).
Whenever she is in a place where other men may hear her recitation, the Recommendation is to make her voice inaudible with the recitation. This is because of what that could entail of Fitnah to the men around her.
In the Maliki Madh’hab it is considered Haraam for her to recite audibly if she knows there are non Mahram men around that may fall trap of Fitnah upon hearing her voice. The evidence for this is the Hadith in which the Rasul salallahu alayhi wasallam said, as was recorded by both Imam Al-Bukhari and Muslim :
التسبيح للرجال والتصفيق للنساء
“Saying the Tasbih (as a way of drawing the attention of the Imaam to an error in the Salaah) is meant for men while women are meant to clap their hands”
It is known that the essence of clapping is that her voice may not be a source of Fitnah for men who are around and listening to her voice.
About this, Al-Haafidh Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalaani said:
“And women were not allowed to say the Tasbih in this case because she was commanded to make inaudible her voice in Salaah generally due to what is feared of Fitnah”
This is in Fat’hu Al-Baari.
Ibn Qudaamah Al-Maqdisi rahimahullah said in Al-Mughni:
“And she should make her voice audible in Salaatu Al-Fajr but if there are men around then she must not raise her voice unless they are of her Mahaarim in which case there is no problem”
If therefore from your question she stays alone, then it is clear that she can recite audible provided it is not loud enough to reach places where there are men that can fall into Fitnah with that.
And Allah knows best.
