#1140: On The Ruling Of Musaabaqah
Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh.
Here is my questions
“What is the rulling of musabaqa in shariah”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salam Warahmatullah Wa barakaatuh.
Alhamdulillah as for competitions generally, then the Fuqahaa are agreed that it is permissible to compete over archery, horse riding, and camel riding, and that it is permissible that prizes be given for it if the prize is paid by one of the two sides or by someone who is not part of the competing sides. The reason for this is the Hadith that was recorded by At-Tirmidhi, Abu Daawud and An-Nasa’i that the Rasul salallahu alayhi wasallam said:
لا سبق إلا في نصل أو خف أو حافر
“There is no competition except in archery, horse racing, or riding”
And the Hadith is Sahih as has been mentioned in ‘Awnu Al-Ma’abud and by Shaykhu Al-Albaani in his Sahihah
Al-Mubaarakfuri rahimahullah mentioned in the ‘Awn that the reason for this is the fact that these sports help with preparing the Ummah for Jihad and its likes.
As for competition in recitation of the Qur’an, it’s memorization, the memorization of the Hadith and its likes, then the Ulamaa are differed about this. The Official positions of the Maliki, the Shaafi’i and the Hanbali Schools is its impermissibility. Whereas the Hanafis hold that it is permissible. Ibn ‘Abdilbarr Al-Maliki in At-Tamhid referred this to the Shaafi’is as their position. This is also the position held by Ibn Taymiyyah and his Student Ibn Al-Qayyim rahimahumullaah. And Ibn Al-Muflih Al-Hanbali among the Students of Shaykhu Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah. And this is the stronger position on this matter insha Allah. This is because the reason for the permissibility of Competition for Horseriding and archery is that it prepares for Jihad and it strenghtens the competitors in the skills required for Jihad. It is known that the Din is strenghtened and championed by both Jihad and Ilm. For further study on this, refer to the book Al-Farusiyyah by Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah rahimahullah.
Barakallahu fikum
And Allah knows best.
