#1151: On Tafsir of the Qur’an in the Month of Ramadan
1.a person said, Tafsir of Qur’an during Month of Ramadhan is innovation an because pious Predecessors do not do so, and it is only Qur’an should be read and recited and nothing more during Month of Ramadhan. Is it true in what he claims? And we can’t teach each other any books during the Month or read any other books except Qur’an?
ANSWER:
Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullah Wabarakaatuh.
Tafseer (Exegesis) is a branch of knowledge which provides an accurate interpretation of the Qur’an and its rulings. Allah, the Almighty has taken it upon himself to explain the meanings of the Qur’an, where He says:
ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا بَيَانَهُ
Then upon Us is its clarification (to you) [Surah Al-Qiyama, 19]
The prophet (may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) as commanded has also explained to his Ummah the meanings of the Qur’an just as he taught them its wordings. Allah says:
… and We have revealed to you the Reminder that you may make clear to the people what has been sent down to them, and that haply they may reflect.[Surah An-Nahl, 44]
Abū ‘Abdirrahman Assulamī reported that the companions when learning from the prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would not proceed past ten verses until they had learned what was contained in them of knowledge and action.
The point here is that all the texts and narrations that commanded and encourages on having the Tafseer of the Qur’an, are Mudlaq (unrestricted) and NONE has exempted the month of Ramadān from other months of the year.
The claim that Tafseer of the Qur’an in Ramadān is innovation is itself innovation and misguidance.
The Asl (ideal ruling) is as the Usuliyyūn have stated:
*الأصل بقاء ماكان على ما كان*
*الأصل بقاء المطلق على إطلاقه حتى يأتي التقييد*
The ideal is taken the unrestricted as it is until the restriction is proven.
In conclusion, it is permissible to have the Tafseer of the Qur’an in Ramadān, because there is no any evidence to exempt it from other months of the year.
And Allah knows best.
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran.
