#1187: Is it Considered Fear of Allah to Weep out of Learning the Sīrah of the Rasūl – Salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam

“What of the case where a man wept becux he heard a scenario that is sorrowful from sirah of the prophet s.a.w. will it be considered as fear for fear of Allah?”

ANSWER:

Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh

The Scenerio you described is Weeping for the Love of Allāh and His Messenger and this is praiseworthy.

It is known that the Companions of the Rasūl Salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam would weep anytime the Rasūl Salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam was mentioned in their presence after his death due to the love they have for him and the pain in his loss, Salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam.

It is mentioned by Ibn ‘Asākir that once Umar radiyallāhu ‘anhu, in the night was walking around Madīnah supervising the community when he saw a house 🏡 in which there was a lamp 🪔, so he went close to it and saw a woman who was Reciting a Poem in the middle of the night:

عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ صَـلَاةُ الْأَبْـــــرَارْ *** صَلَّى عَلَيْكَ المُصْطَفَوْنَ الأَخْيَارْ

قَدْ كُنْتَ قَوَّامَاً بَكِيَّ الأَسْحَارْ *** يَا لَـيْــتَ شِعْرِي وَالمَنَايَا أَطْوَارْ

هَلْ تَجْمَعُنِي وَحَبِيبِي الدَّارْ

Umar then stayed by that Door and wept and kept weeping until she heard his weeping and opened the door asking who was by the Door.

Imām Mālik narrated that one of the Tābi’īn Muhammad bn Al-Mundhir, though he was a Qārī, was not asked any question about a Hadīth except that he wept severely in love of the Rasūl Salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam and in yearning to meet him Salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam.

He mentioned the same thing concerning ‘Āmir bn Abdillāh bn Az-Zubayr. Qādī ‘Iyyādh mentioned all of this, and more in the Shifā.

So weeping while studying the Sīrah of the Rasūl Salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam is a virtue among the virtues of a Muslim in accordance with the practice of the Companions and the People of Taqwah after them. It is out of love for the Rasūl Salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam, out of pain over his death and out of yearning to meet him.

May Allāh grant us and you the Tawfīq to be on the Path of Allāh and the Path of the Rasūl Salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam until we depart this world to unite with him in the Firdaws, Āmīn
