#12. THE HONEY THAT SMELLS OF ALCOHOL

” Assalamu alaykum I bought honey but is smells of alcohol and wen ever I open the bottle it makes gas noise please what am I to do? And the lady sold it expensive”

ANSWER

Wa alaykum salaam warahmatullaah wabarakaatuh

Alhamdulillaah!

Imaam At-Tirmidhi – rahimahullaah – recorded in the Sun an with a Sahih Isnaad that the Rasul – salallaahu alayhi wasallam – said:

ﻣﺎ ﺃﺳﻜﺮ ﻛﺜﻴﺮﻩ ﻓﻘﻠﻴﻠﻪ ﺣﺮﺍﻡ .

“That which much of it intoxicates, then little if it is Haraam”

And in another wording, he – salallaahu alayhi wasallam – said:

ﻛﻞ ﻣﺎ ﺃﺳﻜﺮ ﺣﺮﺍﻡ، ﻭﻣﺎ ﺃﺳﻜﺮ ﺍﻟﻔﺮﻕ ﻣﻨﻪ ﻓﻤﻞﺀ ﺍﻟﻜﻒ ﻣﻨﻪ ﺣﺮﺍﻡ .

“Everything which intoxicated is Haraam. And that which if in significant quantity intoxicates, then a handful of it is haraam

Recorded by At-Tirmidhi and Abu Daawud

For this reason, the Ulamaa have mentioned that whenever an alcoholic is mixed with what is halaal to eat or drink, it becomes haraam to consume the mixture.

Imaam Ibn Hazm – rahimahullaah – said:

“Everything which, if much of quantity intoxicates anyone, then a single drop of it and above to what is very quantified is Khamr. It is Haraam to possess it, to sell it, to drink it or for anyone to use it.”

Al-Muhallaa bi Al-Aathaar 7/478

The only exemption is if that mixture has been passed through a process that effectively purifies it of any of the effects of the Khamr.

Shaykhu Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah – rahimahullaah – said:

“And intoxicants, whenever they have been mixed with liquids and treated to such an extent that its traces do not remain and its effects have been done away with, then the one who drinks such liquid is not regarded as one who has drank khamr.”

Al-Fataawa 1/20

With the situation you have depicted, neither was the mixture treated nor are its traces disappeared.

Therefore, such a mixture, regardless of the prize you bought it, has to be done away with.

Allaahu A’alam
Baarakallaahu feekum
Jazaakumullaahu khayran
