#140: The Ruling on Anāshīd
*ANSWER*
Wa alaykum salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh
Alhamdulillāh.
The foremost for a Muslim is to busy himself and to focus his heart to the recitation and study of the Qur’ān. Uthman Ibn ‘Affān – radiyallāhu anhu – once said:
_”Had our hearts been pure, it would not be bored of the Book of Allāh.”_
But in terms of permissibility, as for Anāshīd that do not contain musical instruments, the Ulamā are at a consensus on their permissibility provided it contains words that are meaningful, not against the laws of Allāh, and not excessive in expense of the Qur’ān.
It is known that the human heart is a lover of words when they are arranged and organized in meters. And for this reason, the Fuqahā wrote most of their texts in Poetic Meters of the Bihār or the Urjūzah, and allowed them be sang as songs and transmitted as such.
But as for those that contain musical instruments, they are nothing short of Harām, in accordance with the correct and strong position held by the vast majority of the Ulamā from all of the Madhāhib. And the Ulamā that consider it permissible such as Imām Ibn Hazm – rahimahullāh – are in plain error and it is not permissible to follow their arguments after the error in their positions have been made clear.
