*QUESTION*
*MUST I COVER MY BABY’S HAIR IF I WANT TO OBSERVE SALĀT WHILE CARRYING HER?*
_”As salamu alaikum…Please I want to ask, am I required to cover my baby’s hair while I carry her for prayer?…Sometimes also, I breastfeed and do adhkar and tilawah without uncovering my hair, is it okay?_
*ANSWER*
Wa alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh
Alhamdulillāh, we ask Allāh to bless you and to bless your baby and to make her a child of Islām, one who will rise to its propagation and who will be of Islām’s glory, āmīn.
Concerning carrying her while observing Salāt, then there is nothing that says that her hair must be covered, as long as she is a baby. This is because it has come in the Hadīth in Sahih Bukhārī that the Rasul – salallāhu alayhi wasallam would carry Umamah his grand daughter from Zaynab in Salāt and it is not mentioned that he maintained that her hair must be covered. Islam is a Dīn of mercy and easy especially for those in difficulty, tender and human situations such as a breastfeeding mother.
Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalānī – rahimahullāh – mentioned in the Fat’h from Al-Hasan and An-Nakha’ī that it were even permissible for a woman to breastfeed her child while she is observing Salāt…
As for reciting the Qur’ān or making Adh’kār while breastfeeding and or without covering your hair, it is equally permissible as long as there is no non-Mahram man in your presence. It is not of the conditions of recitation that you cover your Hair. Instead, some of the Ulamā mentioned that it were prefered to do that due to the descent of the Angels of Mercy and as a way of respecting the Qur’ān. They however did not make it a condition or an obligation.
