Q&A (Fatwa)

#179: Ruling on what is said during the Slaughtering of the Udhiyah (sacrifice)

QUESTION

ON WHAT IS SAID DURING THE SLAUGHTERING OF THE UD’HIYA

As-Salaam Alaykum. Please what are the prayers to be recited by the one to slaughter the udhiyah?

ANSWER:

Alhamdulillah, it is reported in sahih Muslim that the Rasul – salallaahu alayhi wasallam – used to say during the slaughtering of his ud’hiya:

بسم الله اللهم تقبل من محمد وآل محمد

“Bismillah; may Allah accept from Muhammad and from the Family of Muhammad”

And in the Musnad of Imaam Abu Dawud with a sound Isnaad, it says he used to say:

بسم الله والله أكبر

Imaam An-Nawawi – rahimahullah – says:

“In it is evidence for the preference of the one who is slaughtering during the cause of the claughtering to say, after the saying of bismillah and the takbir, Allahumma Taqabbal Minni” (ref Sharh Sahih Muslim)

Therefore, you simply say:

“Bismillah Allaahu Akbar, Allaahumma Taqabbal minni”

And if it is on behalf of someone or some people, you say:

“Bismillah, Allaahu Akbar, Allahumma Taqabbal minni wa…” then you name the person.

Allah knows best.
