#181: Ruling on Obeying Christian Parents on things that are Against Islām
QUESTION
CAN I OBEY MY CHRISTIAN MUM ON THINGS THAT ARE AGAINST ISLAM?
“As-Salaamu Alaykum. If one has a mum who is a christian and she tells you to do some certain things which are not inline with the Islamic religion such fasting on certain days, making use of the christian anointing oil which been prayed upon in a church or using water from the church to do certain things but you refuse and she sees it as an act of disobedience from you, what is the right thing to do in that position as an individual…”_
*ANSWER*
Alhamdulillāh, it is not permissible for you to do any of the things that you mentioned in the question you asked regardless of whether you were asked to do them by your mum or not.
The reason for this is that those things you mentioned are of the specific spiritual rites of Kuffār that are tantamount to attributing partners with Allāh (Shirk) and supporting the Kuffār in strengthening their faith and increasing them in numbers.
As for the way out, what is obligatory upon you is to struggle hard to explain to her that the Religion of Islām that you practice and to which you are an adherent does not allow you to do any of the said things.
If she insists and persists after much efforts to convince her in the reverse, then this is of the situations in which there is no blame on a Muslim if his parents are upset with him/her.
We ask Allah for guidance and steadfastness upon the Dīn, āmīn.
