#187: Ruling on Walīmatul Qurʿān

QUESTION

ON WALĪMATU AL-QUR’ĀN

“Asalamu alaykum warahmatullahi wabarakatuhu. Please is it compulsory to do or celebrate walimatul-quran?”

ANSWER:

Alhamdulillaahi Rabbi Al-Aalamin!

Firstly, it is important to know that what is today known as Walimatu Al-Qur’an was not known in the time of the Rasul – salallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam – and was not practiced by his Noble Companions nor by the generation that followed them.

And the athar that is attributed to the Companion ‘Ibn Umar – radiyallaahu ‘anhu – that he observed it after he memorized Suratu Al-Baqarah in eight years is not with an Isnad that we know of and cannot therefore be used as evidence.

Secondly, it is important to know that most of what people do today at what they call ‘Walimatu Al-Qur’an’ are not sanctioned by the Din. In most of those gatherings, there is free mixing of the sexes, intermingling, use of drums, dancing, other musical instruments, and a range of other things that do not agree with Islam. Some ‘Malams’ or ‘Alfas’ also use the medium to gather money and resources from their students and their parents. Aside all of that, it has almost become a medium for the display of knowledge and ostentaciousness (Ar-riyaa). If any of these things can be found at any occassion, whether Walimatu Al-Qur’an or otherwise, such a gathering is Haraam and a Bid’a when it comes to the Qur’an and attributing it to Islaam.

Thirdly, we should state that if the intent behind making a Walimah for the completion of the Qur’an or its memorization is to show thanks to Allaah by feeding people and using the feeding as a tawassul to ask Allaah for the Barakaat, then it is permissible and encouraged.

But that must not be accompanied by anything that is tantamount to Haraam or Bid’a in itself, and there must not be wastage of food, water and resources.

If all we have said above is well understood, then it becomes clear that to imagine that ‘Walimatu Al-Qur’an’ is Waajib is both unfounded and baseless. Rather what people call Walimatu Al-Qur’an in this era is closer to Bid’a and Haraam than it is to Islam.

Allaahu A’alam, baarakallaahu feekum.
