#197: Ruling on Attending a Gathering for the Purpose of Praying for a Scholar
QUESTION
ON ATTENDING A GATHERING FOR THE PURPOSE OF PRAYING FOR A SCHOLAR
“Please can one attend a program that is prepared to make a prayer for the dead scholar?”
ANSWER:
Alhamdulillaahi rabbi al-alameen!
Your question can take three possibilities:
A. That the prayer is organized immediately after his death (i.e the Janaazah); in this case, it is not just permissible, it is an emphatic Sunnah and one of the rights of every Muslim on another Muslim even so the person about whom the question is asked is a Scholar.
B. That it is much after his death and the gathering was called solely for that purpose; in this case, it is not permissible to organise or to attend such a gathering. This is an innovation (bid’a) in the Din, and it doesn’t matter whether or not he is a scholar. We can all pray for any Muslim dead we want from anywhere we are, a gathering/program is not needed for that purpose.
C. That it is much after his death but the gathering was not organized solely for that purpose; in this case, it is permissible to remain in the gathering while the du’a is taking place and to participate in the prayer as long as there is nothing that is a bid’a in the prayer/du’a that is been made.
Allaahu A’alam; baarakallaahu feekum!
