#2: CLARIFICATION ON THE USE OF THE BLACK DYE
” Asslam alaykum. May Allah reward you for the good work you are doing.
I know it is haram for a man to die his beard or head black according to the most correct view
However, in a case of a young man….i mean a man in mid-twenties who has numerous white strands of beard. Would it be permissible to dye it black?
The major reason for this question is that the white beard are making him look older than his age….He has a cooperate job and many people sometimes think he is and old man trying to fake his age as young”
ANSWER
Wa alaykum Salaam Warahmatullaah Wabarakaatuh!
Alhamdulillaah!
We have been asked a question regarding the black dye many times before. The summary of our answer is this:
A. The Ulamaa are at a consensus on the permissibility of using the dye that is coloured other than black
B. Regarding the Black dye, the Ulamaa differed regarding its ruling:
- The majority of the Fuqahaa hold that it is Haraam based on the Ahaadith that have come regarding it.
- The Shaafi’i Imaams hold that it is makruh (disliked) and permissible for the purpose of ambiguities in Jihaad, for a woman who wants to beautify herself for her husband and for the youth to dye his grey hair black.
- With the evidences that abound, we explained that the sound verdict is that it is impermissible: Haraam as majority of the Fuqahaa held.
Based on that, beloved brother, it will not be permissible to use it unless where dire necessities require that.
Our view is that the situation described to us is not one of those dire situations.
Therefore, we enjoin you to fear Allah and not to do what will weaken your position before Him.
