#218: Virtues of Sūratul Mulk and Sūratul Wāqi`ah
QUESTION
ON THE VIRTUES OF SŪRATU AL-MULK AND AL-WĀQI’AH
“As-Salaam Alaykum, please what is the virtue of suratul mulk and the hadith that says reciting suratul waqia at night avert poverty. Is it authentic or not?”
ANSWER:
Alhamdulillaah! Sorry for the lateness in responding to your questions.
There are lots of Ahaadith that emphasize the virtues of reciting Suratu Al-Mulk. Some of them are Sahih (authentic), others are not.
One of the sound ones is what was Transmitted and Recorded by Imaam At-Tirmidhi – and he declared it Hasan – and Imaam Ahmad in his Musnad from Abu Hurayrah – radiyallaahu ‘anhu ‘ that the Messenger of Allaah – salallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam – said:
“There is a Chapter in the Qur’an that contains 30 verses. It interceded for a man until his sins were forgiven for him. That Chapter is Tabaaraka Ladhi Bi Yadihi Al-Mulk”
This is Declared a Hasan Hadith by Imaam Adh-Dhahabi and many other Imaams of Hadith.
Another sound (Sahih) Hadith in this regards is that which says that:
“The Chapter of Tabaaraka is a Protector from the Punishment of the Grave.”
As for the Question on whether the Hadith regarding to Suratu Al-Waaqi’a preventing poverty is Sahih or not, the Hadith you are refering to is Transmitted and Recorded by Imaam Al-Bayhaqi and Abu Ya’ala from Abdullah bn Mas’ud – radiyallaahu anhu – that the Messenger of Allaah – salallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam – said:
“Whosoever recites Suratu Al-Waaqi’a every night will never be afflicted with poverty after wealth”
And it was said that the Narrator (Ibn Mas’ud) used to command his daughters to recite it every night.
The Isnad of the Hadith is highly weak (Da’if). But it is important to note that the Hadith used the arabic word ‘Faaqah’ which implies a sudden loss of wealth once owned, either by fire outbreak or armed-robbery or business misfortune, etc. This is different from ‘Faqr’ which is simply poverty.

However it has come Hasan in a Hadith that the Rasul – salallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam – used to recite Suratu Al-Mulk every night before he sleeps.
