#237: Ruling on whether the Rasūl – Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam Observed Qasr during the Hijrah

QUESTION

“Pleaes did the Prophet Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam prayed Qasr when he migrated to medina or not? Jazakumullahu Khoyran wassalamu Alaykum Warahmatullah”

ANSWER

Wa alaykum salaam warahmatullaah wabarakaatuh; Wa feekum baarakallaah.

Alhamdulillaah, if by your question, you mean whether during the Blessed Hijrah from Makkah to Madinah the Rasul – salallaahu alayhi wasallam – observed Qasr, then the answer is no for the fact that by then, the four raka’aat salawaat for which Qasr is observed were all two raka’aat.

This is apparent from the Hadith of A’ishah – radiyallaahu anha.

Imaam Muslim – rahimahullaah – transmits in his Sahih from Imaam Sufyan Ibn ‘Uyaynah from Az-Zuhri from ‘Urwah that A’ishah – radiyallaahu anha – said:

ﺃﻥ ﺍﻟﺼﻼﺓ ﺃﻭﻝ ﻣﺎ ﻓﺮﺿﺖ ﺭﻛﻌﺘﻴﻦ ﻓﺄﻗﺮﺕ ﺻﻼﺓ ﺍﻟﺴﻔﺮ ﻭﺃﺗﻤﺖ ﺻﻼﺓ ﺍﻟﺤﻀر

“Indeed the first period when the Salaat was made obligatory, it was obligated as two raka’aat. Thus it was maintained as such for the Salaat of the traveler while that of the resident was completed (as four).”

The Ulamaa explained that this was before the Hijrah.

However, if your question is on whether the Rasul – salallaahu alayhi wasallam – observed Qasr in Madinah, then No and that is because He took Madinah as his residence.

And if your question is on whether he observes Qasr anywhere outside Madinah after the year of the Hijrah, then yes. And the entire Ummah are at a consensus on the permissibility of observing the Qasr in the footsteps if the Rasul – salallaahu alayhi wasallam.

Allaahu A’alam
Baarakallaahu feekum
Jazaakumullaahu khayran
