#244: Ruling on the Permissibility of Attributing Death to the Living
QUESTION
” Is it permissible to use word some “killed another” even if he is the sabab of his death in Islam?
Alhamdulillaah Wa As-Salaatu Wa As-Salaamu Ala Rasulillaah.
Dear brother, there is nothing wrong in saying that so so person killed so so person.
There are many places in the Qur’an where Allah used this.
Examples:
Dawud’s killing of Jaalut:
ﻓﻬﺰﻣﻮﻫﻢ ﺑﺈﺫﻥ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ ﻭﻗﺘﻞ ﺩﺍﻭﺩ ﺟﺎﻟﻮﺕ
“And they routed them by the permission of Allah and Daawud killed Jaalut.”
Suratu Al-Baqarah
Qaabil’s killing of Haabil:
ﻓﻄﻮﻋﺖ ﻟﻪ ﻧﻔﺴﻪ ﻗﺘﻞ ﺃﺧﻴﻪ ﻓﻘﺘﻠﻪ ﻓﺄﺻﺒﺢ ﻣﻦ ﺍﻟﺨﺎﺳﺮﻳﻦ
“So, his soul incited and encouraged him to kill his brother and he killed him. He therefore became of the Losers.”
Suratu Al-Baqarah
The Jews’ killing of the Prophets:
ﻓﺒﻤﺎ ﻧﻘﻀﻬﻢ ﻣﻴﺜﺎﻗﻬﻢ ﻭﻛﻔﺮﻫﻢ ﺑﺂﻳﺎﺕ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ ﻭﻗﺘﻠﻬﻢ ﺍﻷﻧﺒﻴﺎﺀ ﺑﻐﻴﺮ ﺣﻖ ﻭﻗﻮﻟﻬﻢ ﻗﻠﻮﺑﻨﺎ ﻏﻠﻒ ﺑﻞ ﻃﺒﻊ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ ﻋﻠﻴﻬﺎ ﺑﻜﻔﺮﻫﻢ ﻓﻼ ﻳﺆﻣﻨﻮﻥ ﺇﻻ ﻗﻠﻴﻼ
“And by their nullification of their covenants, their disbelief in the Verses and signs of Allah and their killing of the Prophets without right and their statement ‘our hearts are locked’. Rather, Allah sealed them by virtue of their Kufr so they do not believe but a little.”
Suratu An-Nisaa
There are very many other verses in the Qur’an like these which will be too much to mention.
In the Ahaadith are more numerous to mention.
Despite that, there is no death without the leave of Allah for a soul will not die until its appointed term is expired. When our knowledge of this is sound, there is nothing wrong in attributing the death of someone or something to what caused its direct death.
