#23. ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS
” Assalaamu alaykum warahmatullaah wabarakaatuh
In light of Quran and Sunnah, and especial the hadith of the Rasul (SAW) that he said we have only two celebrations, that is the two eids. what is the hukm of partaking in and what should be the role of the muslims in these celebrations “happy children’s day”, “happy mothers day”, “happy fathers day”, “happy workers day”, ” “Halloween day”, “independences day”, “democracy day” etc. Also, some people believe that, they are not from any religion, so it permissible to wish someone “happy such and such day”?”
ANSWER
Wa alaykum salaam warahmatullaah wabarakaatuh!
The Hadith is clear with respect to yearly anniversary celebrations that Muslims have only two and that is Id Al-Fitr and Ad’ha.
It is not permissible for a Muslim to add to that unless if he has some evidence of the Qur’an and Sunnah to back himself up.
It is therefore not permissible for a Muslim to participate in any of what you mentioned or to greet people in that regard due to the reasons below:
1. The Hadith that restricted the festival celebrations to the two Ids
2. What it entails of emulating and participating with the Jews and the Christians in things like that
3. The forbiddance of some of those terms in themselves. Example of this in what you mentioned is ‘democracy day’. This is evidently not a thing that Islam condones.
Democracy is a governance system that concepts on the masses governing themselves in accordance to their wishes. Whereas Islam is built upon governance in accordance to the Revelation of the Qur’an and the Sun ah.
