Q&A (Fatwa)

#26 THE PERMISSIBILITY OF A MARRIED WOMAN USING HER HUSBAND’S NAME

” Pls can a married woman continue to use her father’s name with that of his husband
If yes I need a proof”

ANSWER

Alhamdulillaah Wassalaatu Assalaamu Alaa Rasulillaah

Dear questioner,

May Allaah reward you abundantly for seeking to know the ruling on this matter and may Allaah guide us all aright, aameen.

But we must implore you to adopt the best of words and adopt the most excellent of manners when asking questions generally and specifically when the question is based on the Din and directed to people from whom you hope to get valid Shar’i based answers.

Please be guided accordingly.

Then with regards to the question asked, if what you mean is if it were permissible for women to use the names of their husbands such as Mrs Jamilu, then we responded in a detailed manner in another question asked. We mentioned that though the Ulamaa differed on it slightly, evidence proves that it is disliked in the Shari’a to do that.

Please find below the detailed response we gave in that regard.

However, if what you are asking is if it would have been permissible for women to use their husband’s names if they were simply adding it to their fathers’ names, the answer is that the purpose for which the Ulamaa detest the bearing of husbands’ names is for the following reasons:

A. So as not to emulate People of the West

B. So as not to create a situation of misunderstanding and the false impression of attributing a woman to other than her father

Now, if there is no reason to do that, then there is no reason to add both names.
