#265: Does touching the Anus Invalidates the Wudhū


” As-Salaam `Alaykum Waramatullah Wabarakaatuhu. Please I would like to know if the bottom of a person is among those parts of the body that invalidate one’s wudhu if touched with naked hand.”


Wa alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh


Touching of the Anus is not part of the things that void the Wudhū.

There are Seven things that the Fuqahā have mentioned can void the Wudhū.

Abū Abdillāh Al-Qādī – rahimahullāh – said:

نواقض الوضوء يا خليل؛ سبع اتت يدعمها الدليل

الردة وأكل لحم الابل؛ خارج من دبر أو قبل

نوم ومس الفرج أو جنابة؛ زوال عقل هذه الإصابة.

“O Friend, Voiders of Wudhū are; Seven that are backed by proof

Apostasy, Eating the Camel Meat; Excretion from Anus or Private Organ

Sleep, Touching the Private Organ or Ejaculation; Or Unconciousness, these they are”

And in a more elucidating approach, Imām Ibn Āshir – rahimahullāh – said in the Murshid:

فصل نواقض الوضوء ستة عشر ؛ بول وريح سلس إذا ندر

وغائط نوم ثقيل مذي؛ سكر وإغماء جنون ودي

لمس وقبلة وذا إن وجدت؛ لذة عادة كذا إن قصدت

إلطاف مرأة كذا مس الذكر والشك في الحدث كفر من كفر

“Section: Spoilers of Wudhū are 16 in no: Urine, Wind, dripping of Urine if not ailment

Faeces, Heavy sleep, Prostatic Fluid; Intoxication, Unconciousness, Insanity, Post-Urine Fluid

Fondly Touching and Kissing, if Pleasure is sought or derived

From a woman – opposite sex -; Touching the Penis, Doubting a Spoiler, and the Kufr of he who commits Kufr”

But there is weak position that holds that touching inside the anus voids the Wudhū.

Imām Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisī – rahimahullāh – said in the Mughnī that the Shāfi’ī’s dominant position is that it voids the Wudhū while the Hanafī’s, the Mālikīs and the Hanbalīs hold that it doesn’t void the Wudhū.

The evidence presented by the Shafi’is is the Hadīth:

[ من مس فرجه فليتوضأ

“Whosoever touches his Private Part should renew his Wudhū”

They explained that this Hadīth refers to both the Private Part and the Anus.

This position is very weak as we have said.
