#269: Is it Permissible to refrain from Marriage
Question
Afwan Mallam i don’t know if I can ask a question that I was asked by a sister
Is it compulsory to marry when you know it’s not fitnah for you
ANSWER
Marriage is a Sunnah of the Rasul alaihi salam of which he said;
Marriage is my Sunnah. The one that refrains from my Sunnah is not of me.
Based on this hadith, a Muslim can only choose not to marry when;
1. The person is impotent and has no sexual urges.
2. The person is afflicted with a disease that can be transmitted to the other partner in the course of matrimonial relationship.
3. If the person is deeply engrossed in activity for the Ummah such that it takes his attention away from the sexual urges and thus fears not being able to render the rights of the partner due to this service to the Ummah.
4. Or the person if afflicted with a situation such that he practically cannot fulfil marrital rights.
Anyone that chooses not to marry without any of the above reasons will be taking a decision which can either be haram, or makrooh depending on the individuals situation.
And Allah knows best.
