#280: Ruling on Matters of NYSC
Question
“Assalamu alaykum. Admin I sincerely and desperately need advice. I read this wonderful PDF from a brother about how some of the activities in NYSC is kufr. Never knew it was like that as I never cared about the whole thing in the first place. But my parent will never agree for me to forfeit it… What do I do? May Allah reward you”
ANSWER
Wa alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
Alhamdulillāh. May Allāh reward you too.
About the book to which you refer, I have the following comments:
1. In its outlook, the book is good, explanatory and excellent and attempts to touch this thorny issue that many people, Ulamā inclusive, try to avoid
2. There is however a little disconnect between the statement its author made under the swearing-in:
“he is one of those who think they can scale through without falling into Kufr”
And his conclusion:
“Therefore it is Harām…to participate in this scheme called NYSC”
Is the matter of its attendance a sure fall into Kufr? and what are the parameters that make for the conclusion he made?
He has however mentioned that the one who attends should be scrutinized for his ruling to be arrived at. This is excellent.
3. What is left out in the book are the details that make whosoever ponders them be satisfied with the conclusion he arrived at.
Alhamdulillāh. I wished the author elucidated further.
My advice to you brother, is to do as best as you can to avoid it unless if you fear that your relationship with your parents will be forever strained. In that case, you should avoid the camp program for as much as you can while not signing out of the NYSC as a whole.
Allāh knows best.
