#285: Ruling on Plaiting Hair with Wool

Question

As-Salaamu Alaykum. Please help me with this questions
1.Can a muslim woman use wool i.e admacassa to plait her hair in any style, please with convincing evidence

ANSWER

1. This issues revolves around two ahadith of the rasul alaihi salam which are:

Both Bukhaari and Muslim narrated from Ibn ‘Umar radiallahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah alaihi salam said: “May Allah curse the one who adds hair extensions and the one who has them added, the one who does tattoos and the one who has them done.”

Secondly, Imam Muslim narrated that Jaabir ibn ‘Abdullah radiallahu anhu said: The Prophet alaihi salam forbade women to attach anything to their head.

The scholars differ as regarding combining both ahadith.

Imam An Nawawi said in Sharh Muslim: al-Qaadi ‘Iyaad said: The scholars differed concerning this issue. Maalik, at-Tabari and many or most of the scholars said that attaching anything is prohibited, whether it is hair, wool, or cloth. They quoted as evidence for that the hadeeth of Jaabir which was narrated by Muslim, according to which the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) forbade women to attach anything to their head.

Al-Layth ibn Sa‘d said: The prohibition applies specifically to attaching hair; there is nothing wrong with attaching wool, cloth and so on. Others said: All of that is permissible. This is narrated from ‘Aa’ishah, but it is not narrated from her in a saheeh report; rather the saheeh report from her is in accordance with the view of the majority.

from the narrations, we can conclude the following:

1. Attaching hair attachments to the hair is a major sin. Because a curse of the rasul alaihi salam is upon a person that does it or assist in making it.

2. The hadith of Jaabir which generally makes it prohibited to attach anything on the hair should be guided by the first hadith of Ibn Umar.

In this light, we say: the more what is attached looks like or resembles the hair, the more it is forbidden. And the worst case is if it is actual hair attachments.

However, if what is used does not look in anyway like the hair such that a person does not have to look twice to tell, that it is hair or not, then such is allowed based on two conditions which are:

1. that it is not an imitation of the non Muslims.
2. That it is not done with the aim of showoff and public display of beauty to people who are not her mahram.

And Allah knows best.
