#327: Ruling on Eating Snakes that lives in Water

QUESTION

“As-Salaamu Alaykum. Please what about the snakes that live in water”

ANSWER

Wa alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.

Alhamdulillāh.

As for snakes that live in water, some of the ‘Ulamā gave preponderance to the general forbiddance of eating snakes over the general permissibility of eating sea animals whereas others gave the preponderance to the general permissibility of eating all sea animals as has come on the verse where Allāh said:

أُحِلَّ لَكُمْ صَيْدُ الْبَحْرِ وَطَعَامُهُ مَتَاعًا لَّكُمْ

“Sea animals are permissible for you. Its meat is food for you.”

However, the more correct position is the later. Which is that it is permissible to eat it as long as there is no harm or poison in its meat.
