#338: On the Statement of the Muhaddith Shaykh Abū ‘Alī Al-Hārith Al-Hasanī On Shaykh Muhammad Nāsiruddīn Al-Albānī

Alhamdulillāh!
As for Shaykh Muhammad Nāsiruddīn Al-Albānī – rahimahullāh, he is an Imām of Hadīth in his time, and a Mujaddid of the Science of Takhrīj and Tahqīq. He revived the Salafi School of relying upon textual evidences in research and Fiqh, and fought Bid’ah with all his life. He was tried severely in his life in this pursuit and extinguished his life propagating, researching, working and standing in defense of the Sunnah of the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam.
But, like every other Imām among the Imams of our Dīn, Al-Albānī had his mistakes, and the mistakes of the ‘Ulamā are not allowed to affect their reputations in so far as those mistakes and errors were made out of Ijtihād.
The Muhaddith Shaykh Abū ‘Alī Al-Hārith Al-Hasanī – hafidhahullah – is a later Scholar of Hadith who has excelled in his research and preceded his peers in the Science of Hadīth. He established a Methodology for verifying and checking the Authenticity of Hadīth and its narrators and re-examined some Asānid that have been treated by some of the ‘Ulamā before him. In this regard, he differed immensely with Shaykh Al-Albāni and faulted some of his methodologies.
There is nothing strange in this to the Student of Knowledge who is familiar with the texts of our ‘Ulamā and how each stalwart Imām exerted efforts and dexterity in arriving at the truth. This is Healthy debate in our Literatures and in our history.
Imām Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah – rahimahullāh – mentioned in _I’lām Al-Muwaqqi’īn_ that the matters of Fiqh about which ‘Abdullah Ibn Mas’ūd and ‘Umar Ibn Al-Khattāb differed amounted to over a hundred but that never made them to see deficiency in one another.
The matters about which Shakh Abū ‘Alī faulted Shaykh Al-Albānī – rahimahullāh – as is found in your quotaion are true and were pointed out by him as a way of warning the Student of Knowledge of those mistakes from the Shaykh.
However, Shaykh Abū ‘Alī – hafidhahullāh – is known for his defense of Shaykh Muhammad Nasiruddin Al-Albānī against the attacks and slanders of the People of Bid’ah. This is known to all Students of Knowledge that follow his writings.
