#35. THE RULING OF SOME GAMES
” pls admin, are these games(ludo, whot, draft and aayo) allowed in islam”
ANSWER
Alhamdulillaah!
The Ulamaa divide games broadly into three categories:
1. That which is Halaal and encouraged;
This specifically includes horse galloping, sprinting archery, wrestling and swimming. This is because they aid in Jihad and in strengthening the Muslim. And by generic derivation, any game that does same. I.e. aids in Jihaad and strengthening the Muslim.
2. That which is disliked (makruh);
This includes games that are not haraam in themselves, depends on the skills of the player but serve as time-wasters. Example of this is Card Playing, etc.
3. That which is Haraam in itself by virtue of one of the following spoilers;
A. It involves gambling
B. It depends primarily on chance not the skill of the player.
The evidence for this is what Allah – ta’aala – said in Suratu Al-Maa’ida:
( ﻳﺎﺃﻳﻬﺎ ﺍﻟﺬﻳﻦ ﺁﻣﻨﻮﺍ ﺇﻧﻤﺎ ﺍﻟﺨﻤﺮ ﻭﺍﻟﻤﻴﺴﺮ ﻭﺍﻷﻧﺼﺎﺏ ﻭﺍﻷﺯﻻﻡ ﺭﺟﺲ ﻣﻦ ﻋﻤﻞ ﺍﻟﺸﻴﻄﺎﻥ ﻓﺎﺟﺘﻨﺒﻮﻩ ﻟﻌﻠﻜﻢ ﺗﻔﻞﺣﻮﻥ ( 90 )
“O you who believe! Indeed intoxicants, gambling, idolatry and game of chance are a filth from the doings of Shaytaan. So refrain from them that you may prosper.”
Then Allah went ahead to give us sound reasons saying:
ﺇﻧﻤﺎ ﻳﺮﻳﺪ ﺍﻟﺸﻴﻄﺎﻥ ﺃﻥ ﻳﻮﻗﻊ ﺑﻴﻨﻜﻢ ﺍﻟﻌﺪﺍﻭﺓ ﻭﺍﻟﺒﻐﻀﺎﺀ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﺨﻤﺮ ﻭﺍﻟﻤﻴﺴﺮ ﻭﻳﺼﺪﻛﻢ ﻋﻦ ﺫﻛﺮ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ ﻭﻋﻦ ﺍﻟﺼﻞﺍﺓ ﻓﻬﻞ ﺃﻧﺘﻢ ﻣﻨﺘﻬﻮﻥ ( 91)
“Indeed Shaytaan only wants to cause between you hatred and enmity by way of intoxicants and gambling and hinder you from the remembrance of Allaah and from Salaat. So won’t you desist?”
The Ulamaa, rahinahumullaah derive from that that anything that is capable of causing enmity, hatred, division among Muslims, and dissuade them from the dhikr of Allah and Salaat becomes Haraam.
