#370: Ruling on washing a Dead Body with Dreadlocks

QUESTION

” As salaam alaykum…. On the issue of dreadlocks. At the time of observing janaaza for a female we usually loose the hair and plate it into three but a deadlocked hair can not be loose but cut, how do we make it into three”

ANSWER

Wa alaykum salaam warahmatullaah wabarakaatuh.

Alhamdulillaah.

Concerning the issue of dreadlocks, it is not entirely true that every dreadlocks cannot be loosened and if that is the case, any dread locks that can not be loosened and prevents water from getting to the hairs and scalp is not permissible in Islam due to the observance of Janaaba bath and wudhu.

But in circumstances where there is a Muslim corpse of whether male of female with hairs that cannot be loosened so as to be washed for the janaazah, if it can be ensured that the water gets to the scalps and the braids or locks are thoroughly washed and soaked, then there is no problem Allāh willing.

Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran.
