#375: Fulfilling the Vow made to Allah
QUESTION
“Assalam alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh. Pls I have a question that requires urgent response. Thanks. Pls response is required ASAP.
Question: a person promised to spend certain amount of money in Allah’s cause if Allah bestowed him certain sum. However when Allah blessed that person with the sum he found out that other needs arise and so he reduced the amount he originally pledged. What is the Islamic ruling”
ANSWER
Wa alaykum salaam warahmatullaah wabarakaatuh.
Alhamdulillaah, it is not permissible under any circumstances not to fulfil a pledge made to Allah – ta’aala – for whatever reason there is. The Fuqahaa are at an agreement regarding this.
But where there is a compelling incapacity, it becomes permissible to delay the fulfilment until capability is attained and to annul it is not at all permissible.
Therefore, the situation you just mentioned will justify you seeking reprieve and fulfilling what is left of your pledge when your situation gets better and will not justify you abandoning its fulfillment entirely by reducing the amount pledged.
Allāhu A’alam
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran.
