#382: The One Who misses Jumu`ah
QUESTION
” Assalam alaykum.What will someone who misses solatul-jum’ua while he was in d mosque. I mean on getting to d mosque on friday,d prayer was concluded.”
ANSWER
Wa alaykum salaam warahmatullaah wabarakaatuh.
Alhamdulillaah, the Fuqahaa of the Madhaahib are at a consensus that whosoever misses Salaatu Al-Jumu’a should observe Dhuhr in its stead. Imaam Muhammad bn Ismaa’il As-San’aani – rahimahullaah – mentioned this in his book ‘Subulu As-Salaam’.
The same applies to the woman, upon whom Jumu’a is not Waajib by consensus, the traveler and the sick Muslim. This is the verdict of the Fuqahaa as was recorded by Imaam Ibn Al-Mundhir in ‘Al-Ijmaa’.
However it should be understood that missing the Jumu’ah is not a simple thing in the Shari’ah.
The Collectors of the Sunan: Abu Daawud, At-Tirmidhi, An-Nasa’i and Ibn Maajah all transmitted from the Companion Abu Ja’ad Ad-Damari – radiyallaahu an hu – that the Prophet – salallaahu alayhi wasallam – said:
“Whosoever abandons the Jumu’ah three times out of disregard for it, Allaah will place a seal on his heart.”
And in the wordings of Imaam Ad-Daarimi, there is no mention of three times.
Shaykh AbdulHaqq said in Al-Lama’aat:
“What is apparent is that what is meant by disregard here is laziness, sloth and unseriousness in observing it, not that it means disrespect and denigration. That will be Kufr. The import is to hint at the fact that it is a great sin.”
Imaam Ibn Al-Arabi Al-Maaliki – said:
“What is meant by placing a seal on his heart is that a lock is placed on his heart by screening Khayr from coming into it.”
