#387: Facing the Qiblah while reciting the Qur`an
QUESTION
“Is it true that when reciting the Quran u should face the qiblah”
ANSWER
Alhamdulillāh!
We are sorry for the delay in answering this question. It was largely unnoticed.
It is regarded as Mustahabb (Prescribed) and supererogatory to face the Qibla while reciting the Qur’an. This is the verdict of the Ulamaa by consensus.
It was mentioned in ‘Al-Mawsu’atu Al-Fiqhiyya’:
“The Ulamaa have settled on the fact that the direction of the Qiblah is the best direction and for that reason, it is preferred to remain in its direction whenever one is sitting. The reason for this is the statement of He – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – where he said:
( ﺇﻥ ﺳﻴﺪ ﺍﻟﻤﺠﺎﻟﺲ ﻣﺎ ﺍﺳﺘﻘﺒﻞ ﺍﻟﻘﺒﻠﺔ )
“Indeed, the master of all sitting gatherings is that in which the Qibla is faced.”
The author of ‘Al-Furu’u’ said: and (it is preferred that) he faces it in all good deeds except by virtue of an excuse.”
End quotation
Shaykh Muhammad Naasiruddin Al-Albaani – rahimahullaah – declared it as Hasan in ‘Sahihu At-targhibi Wa At-Tarhib’ 3/107
Therefore, facing the Qibla while reciting the Qur’an is preferred and mustahabb.
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran.
