ANSWER

Wa ‘alaykum salaam warahmatullaah wabarakaatuh.

Alhamdulillaah!

Every name that has meaning and connotes good in this world and the hereafter is permissible, and there are certain names that we were forbidden from calling ourselves.

1. Any name that is exclusive to Allaah – ta’aala.

Imaam Ibn Al-Qayyim Al-Jawziyya – rahimahullaah – mentioned among this, Allaah, Ar-Rahman, Al-Hakam, Al-Ahad, As-Samad Al-Khaaliq, Ar-Razzaaq, Al-Jabbaar, Al-Mutakabbir, Al-Awwal, Al-Aakhir, Al-Baatin, and Allaamu Al-Ghuyub.

There are others such as Al-Quddus, and others which shouldn’t be addressed to other than Allaah.

Imaam An-Nawawi – rahimahullaah – said:

“And know that naming with this name – I.e. ‘Maliku Al-Amlaak’ – is haraam, the same thing applies to the Names of Allah ta’ala that are specific to Him such as Ar-Rahman, Al-Quddus, Al-Muhaymin, khaaliqu Al-Khalq, and its likes…”

Al-Minhaj sharhu Sahih Muslim Ibn Al-Hajjaaj

Imaam Ar-Ramli – rahimahullaah – said in his ‘Al-Haashiyatu ‘Ala Asnaa Al-Mataalib’:

“His (the author’s) statement: ‘but for that which is exclusive to Allaah (among the 99 Names)…’, then we derive from it their statement here that it is permissible to name ourselves with any of the Names of Allah ta’ala which is not exclusive to Him. But for those are specific to Him, then it is Haraam. This is what An-Nawawi declared in his Sharhu Muslim”

Ibn Al-Qayyim – rahimahullaah – said in ‘At-Tuhfatu Al-Mawdud’:

“What is meant here is that it is not permissible for anyone to bear any of the names of Allah that are specific to Him and is reserved for Him. But for names by which He is refered and other than Him are referred, such as As-Sami’, Al-Basir, Ar-Ra’uf, Ar-Rahim, then it is permissible that a created being be referred to with it. Even at that, it is not permissible to use the definitive restrictive article the way it is used exclusively for Allah.”

What Ibn Al-Qayyim – alayhi rahmatullaah – means here is that it is not permissible to use the names of Allah that are specific to Him, and the Names that are not specific to Him but carry the article ‘Al’. Example here is that for names such as Ar-Rahim, it is wrong but ‘Rahim’ will be permissible.

Therefore, in the question you asked, while Qudus is completely forbidden to bear as name, it is permissible to bear ‘AbdulQuddus, Salam, Jaleel, Mu’min and Aziz with the condition that they are not prefaced by ‘Al-‘ so you can’t say ‘Al-Jaleel’ for example.

However, even with this, some of the Ulamaa dislike it. So the best is to preface with Abdul for all.

2. Any name that should be exclusive to the Rasul – salallaahu alayhi wasallam – such as ‘Sayyid al-khalq’ (the Master of creation), etc.

3. Any name that is tantamount to shirk (associating partners with Allaah) such as ‘AbdushShams’, ‘Abdullaat’, etc.

4. Any name that belongs to Iblis or the Shayaatin

5. Any name that entails too much self praise.

Allāhu A’alam.
