Q&A (Fatwa)

#404: Saying the Āmīn behind the Imām

QUESTION

“Pls my question goes lyk dis: In a situation wer by d imam did nt say amin after suratul fatiha, wen shuld we say d amin.”

ANSWER

Alhamdulillaah!

We are sorry for the long delay in responding to your question.

The Maliki, Shāfi’i and Hanbali schools are at an agreement on the fact that saying ‘āmīn’ aloud after Suratu Al-Faatiha recited by the Imaam during the Salāt is a mustahabb (deed that is liked and recommended).

The Hanafis hold a position contrary that the saying of the Āmīn should not be made loudly. To them, neither the Imaam nor the followers should say the āmīn loudly.

Though there is a Hadith in which the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – asked us to say the Āmīn after the Imaam, it should not be understood as a condition for the saying of ‘Āmīn that the Imaam says it loud.

Allāhu A’alam.

Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran.
