#406: The Ahādīth Classification of Shaykh Muhammad Nāsiruddin Al-Albāni – Rahimahullāh

Sir,
In reference to yesterday’s halqah, please what do Islamic scholars have to say in regards to Ahaadeeth classifications of Shaykh Muhammad Naasiruddeen Al-Albaani, rahimahuLlaah?

Alhamdulillaah!

Shaykh Muhammad Nasiruddin Al-Albaani – rahimahullaah – for clarity purposes is among the greatest Ulamaa to walk the earth in the 20th century and who have contributed much to Islamic Literature and to the Muslim Library.

He took his time to go through and to revise much of the works of the scholars of Hadith in the past and dedicated his life to classifying the Ahaadith that were either classified loosely or left out by some of the Ulama a of the past. May Allaah be merciful to him.

By and large, he was an Imaam and an authority in his own right in the Science of Takhrij (Ahaadith verification and checking) and the Science of Tas’hih and Tad’if (Authenticating and Weakening) of Ahaadith due to what Allah bestowed upon him of depth in the knowledge of Hadith and encompassing knowledge of the different books of Hadith that he had studied thoroughly. Rahimahillaah.

However, his writings and Ahaadith classifications are not at all free of errors and should not be taken as the final ruling on Ahaadith for the student of Knowledge.

This is because he engaged in Ijtihad in declaring them on accordance to his own classifications and has some pluses and minuses. There are many occasions in which, he himself, corrected himself and changed some of the classifications he had made towards the end of his lifetime.

As students of knowledge, we must be people of thoroughness and research, people of serious inquiry and scrupulousness especially on the matters that have to do with Hadith.

There are some of the Stallions of the Sciences of Hadith in this era of ours such as Shaykh Umar Ibn Mas’ud Al-Haddushi – hafidhahullaah – who are dedicating their lives to the thorough investigations of Ahaadith, even those that have been perused by some of the forerunners in this time such as Al-Albaani, we ask Allāh to make their efforts beneficial for the Ummah, āmīn.

But for what some of the Scholars of Bid’a say about Shaykh Al-Albaani – rahimahullaah – of insults and heresy, there is nothing of it that is true. His classifications, most of them are correct and close to the truth and his writings are generally advised for the reader and student of Knowledge to study.

May Allaah be merciful to Shaykh Al-Albaani and all of the Ulamaa of Islam, and may He join us altogether in Jannatu Al-Firdaws, Āmīn.
