#407: On the Meaning of the Hadīth about Three People that would not be Looked at on the Day Of Resurrection
QUESTION
” Salaam alaikum, @Admin kindly explain what is meant by the third person (I.e I don’t understand the situation of d third person, …’ve been given much by my goods…)
Sahih Bukhari (Distribution of Water – 7)
Narrated Abu Huraira, Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) said, “There are three persons whom Allah will not look at on the Day of Resurrection, nor will he purify them and theirs shall be a severe punishment. They are: -1. A man possessed superfluous water, on a way and he withheld it from travelers. -2. A man who gave a pledge of allegiance to a ruler and he gave it only for worldly benefits. If the ruler gives him something he gets satisfied, and if the ruler withholds something from him, he gets dissatisfied. -3. And man displayed his goods for sale after the `Asr prayer and he said, ‘By Allah, except Whom None has the right to be worshipped, I have been given so much for my goods,’ and somebody believes him (and buys them). The Prophet (pbuh) then recited: “Verily! Those who purchase a little gain at the cost of Allah’s Covenant and their oaths.” (3.77)”
ANSWER
Wa alaykum salaam warahmatullaah wabarakaatuh.
Alhamdulillaah!
The Hadith to which you refer is recorded by Imaam Al-Bukhaari in the Sahih from Abu Hurayrah – radiyallaahu an hu – that the Rasul – salalllaahu alayhi wasallam – said:
((ﺛﻼﺛﺔ ﻻ ﻳﻜﻠﻤﻬﻢ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ ﻳﻮﻡ ﺍﻟﻘﻴﺎﻣﺔ ﻭﻻ ﻳﺰﻛﻴﻬﻢ ﻭﻟﻬﻢ ﻋﺬﺍﺏ ﺃﻟﻴﻢ ﺭﺟﻞ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻓﻀﻞ ﻣﺎﺀ ﺑﺎﻟﻄﺮﻳﻖ ﻳﻤﻨﻊ ﻣﻨﻪ ﺍﺑﻦ ﺍﻟﺴﺒﻴﻞ ﻭﺭﺟﻞ ﺑﺎﻳﻊ ﺇﻣﺎﻣﺎ ﻻ ﻳﺒﺎﻳﻌﻪ ﺇﻻ ﻟﺪﻧﻴﺎﻩ ﺇﻥ ﺃﻋﻄﺎﻩ ﻣﺎ ﻳﺮﻳﺪ ﻭﻓﻰ ﻟﻪ ﻭﺇﻻ ﻟﻢ ﻳﻒ ﻟﻪ ﻭﺭﺟﻞ ﻳﺒﺎﻳﻊ ﺭﺟﻼ ﺑﺴﻠﻌﺔ ﺑﻌﺪ ﺍﻟﻌﺼﺮ ﻓﺤﻠﻒ ﺑﺎﻟﻠﻪ ﻟﻘﺪ ﺃﻋﻄﻲ ﺑﻬﺎ ﻛﺬﺍ ﻭﻛﺬﺍ ﻓﺼﺪﻗﻪ ﻓﺄﺧﺬﻫﺎ ﻭﻟﻢ ﻳﻌﻂ ﺑﻬﺎ))
“There are three persons upon whom, on the Day of Qiyaamah, Allah will neither look, nor will He purify them. And theirs shall be a severe punishment.
A man who possesses abundance of water by the road side and then he prevents travelers from it.
A man who pledged allegiance to a ruler solely for the benefits of the world in such a way that if he gives him what he wants, he is faithful (to his oath) and otherwise, he doesn’t fulfil to him (his oath).
And a man who, after the Asr prayer, displays his goods for sale to another man at a specific price. Then he swears by Allah (saying) he has been given such and such a price for the good (I.e. his cost price). Then he (the potential buyer) believes him while in reality he was not sold to at such price.”
The hadith has slightly different wordings but all are not divergent in their main text.
The third person referred to in the Hadith is the person who swears by Allah to the purchaser of his goods that his cost price was higher than it is so as to convince the buyer that he was been just to him. Al-Haafidh Ibn Hajar mentioned in Al-Fat’h a wording of the same Hadith in which the seller swears that he was actually selling the good to the buyer at a rate lower than his cost price.
Why was the time of ‘Asr mentioned?
Al-Haafidh Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalaani – rahimahullaah – said:
“Al-Khattaabi said: the time of ‘Asr was particularly mentioned due to the severity of sins in that time. Though swearing on lies is Haram unrestrictedly in all situations, but because Allah magnified the importance of this period by making the Angels gather in it, and it is the end period of the day and the time of the accumulation of the deeds, since deeds are reckoned by their last, therefore the sin becomes grievous…”
