#425: The Gravity of the Sin of Usury

QUESTION

” Private question. The sins of riba are divided into hundred parts and d smallest of them is like d sin of one who slept(had sexual intercourse ) with his mother “. Is this statement an authentic Hadith?”

ANSWER

Alhamdulillāh!
Yes, there are lots of Ahaadith that mention the punishments and sins of Usury.

Of them is the Hadīth narrated by the Companion ‘Abdullah Ibn Handhalah – radiyallaahu anhuma – that the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam said:

ﺩﺭﻫﻢ ﺭﺑﺎ ﻳﺄﻛﻠﻪ ﺍﻟﺮﺟﻞ ﻭﻫﻮ ﻳﻌﻠﻢ ﺃﺷﺪ ﻣﻦ ﺳﺘﺔ ﻭﺛﻼﺛﻴﻦ ﺯﻧﻴﺔ ‏» ﺭﻭﺍﻩ ﺃﺣﻤﺪ ﻭﺍﻟﻄﺒﺮﺍﻧﻲ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﻜﺒﻴﺮ

“A dirham gotten from riba that is consumed by a man knowingly is more grievous than 36 zinas!”

Recorded and transmitted by Imām Ahmad in the Musnad and At-Tabaraani in Al-Kabir

Of them also is the Hadith of Ibn Mas’ud – radiyallaahu an hu – that the Rasul – salallaahu alayhi wasallam – said:

ﺍﻟﺮﺑﺎ ﺛﻼﺙ ﻭﺳﺒﻌﻮﻥ ﺑﺎﺑﺎ، ﺃﻳﺴﺮﻫﺎ ﻣﺜﻞ ﺃﻥ ﻳﻨﻜﺢ ﺍﻟﺮﺟﻞ ﺃﻣﻪ ‏» ﺭﻭﺍﻩ ﺍﻟﺤﺎﻛﻢ، ﻭﻗﺎﻝ ﺻﺤﻴﺢ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺷﺮﻁ ﺍﻟﺒﺨﺎﺭﻱ ﻭﻣﺴﻠﻢ .

“Ribā is into 73 divisions. The least of those is like a man having intercourse with his mother.”

Recorded by Al-Haakim. He said: ‘It is Sahih in accordance with the Conditions adopted by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim for Authenticating.’

However, the hadith with its various wordings has been graded weak by the great Imāms of Hadith. Of them:

Imām Ibn Abi Haatim in ‘Al-‘Ilal’
Al-Haafidhu Al-Iraaqi in ‘Al-Asfaar’,
Imām Ibn Al-Jawzi in ‘Al-Mawdu’aat’,
Imām Al-Kinaani in ‘Tanzihu Ash-Shari’a’,
and Al-Haafidh As-Suyuti in ‘Al-La’Aali Al-Masnu’a’.

However, majority of the Ulamaa consider it permissible to quote and use it as reference.

Allāhu A’alam

Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran.
