#434: Ruling on the Blood that flows just before Labour and Child Birth
QUESTION
” Please a woman that is seeing sign of labour like mucus and blood but still mild can she pray salat”
ANSWER
Alhamdulillāh!
The Ulamā differed slightly on the blood that flows from the pregnant woman before childbirth.
Some of the Ulamā give it the same ruling as menstruation. This is the Maliki position.
Imām Al-Adawi Al-Maaliki – rahimahullāh – said in his Haashiyah:
“Nifās is the blood that flows due to childbirth, after it according to the most correct position. It includes the blood that flows during it (labour) according to the majority, and the blood that flows just before it is also included (nifaas) according to the wrong position. What is correct is that it is Hayd…”
While some of them consider it to be same as the post-natal (nifaas).
This is the Hanbali position.
It is mentioned in ‘Al-Kashshaafu Al-Qinaa’:
“The Nifās is a blood that is expelled by the womb alongside childbirth and before it by two or three days provided it is accompanied by its relevant symptoms.”
Others considered it to be a wasted blood.
This is the fatwa of the Shaafi’is and the Hanafis.
It is mentioned in ‘Al-Hidaayah’:
“And the blood that the pregnant woman sees at the onset of labour or during labour before the birth itself is considered ‘istihaadah’ (wasted blood and normal bleeding)…”
What is sound – and Allāh knows best – is that any blood that is accompanied with the symptoms of childbirth that is seen by the woman who expects a delivery is considered Nifās and such a woman, Allāh willing – is to refrain from Salāt.
Allāhu A’alam
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran.
