#445: The Colors of Women`s Dye

QUESTION

” Salam alaykum.

Pls,is it allowed for a lady to tint her hair to an color she desires?

ANSWER

Wa alaykum salaam warahmatullaah wabarakaatuh

Alhamdulillaah.

Know, may Allah be merciful to you that the general ruling for women’s use of dyes are the following:

1. It must allow for water passage

2. It must not be used to arouse the sexual appetites of others that are not her husband

3. It must not include impermissible attachments that give a false impression that it were a part of her hair

4. It must not be permanent in such a way that it cannot be reversed

5. It must be something that her husband likes if she is a married woman

6. It must be done with something that is not impure (Najis)

If all of those have been ensured, then there is no exception to the colour she may use *except for black.*

This is because the Ulamaa have differed with regards to that and the safest of their positions is to *avoid dying to black.*

We had explained the ruling of using the black dye in a previous Fatwa before. Kindly refer to it.
