ANSWER
Wa alaykum salaam warahmatullaah wabarakaatuh
May Allah bless you and grant excellent and sound health to your sister, aameen.
As regards to your question, though the Ulamaa have differed concerning the precise calculations of the periods of blood flow of women in menstruation, nifaas (post natal bleeding) and the intervals that are necessary between them, the sound position that is held by the Muhaqqiqun is that the menstrual blood has its characteristics which, once found in the blood flow of women must be referred to as menstruation.
Women know the characteristics of the mentruatal blood. It has its distinct odour, colour and does not coat.
Therefore, it doesn’t matter the period, what matters is the characteristics. Once you find it, refrain from everything menstruating women refrain from. And once you do not see those characteristic features, then it is not menstruation and you will need to treat the flow as an excessive one known as ‘Istihaadah’ in the books of Fiqh.
