#493: Ruling on the Ramadan Fast of Muslims at the Arctic

QUESTION

“As-Salaam aleikum Admin. A friend ask me this question, but by Allah i have no evidences for my answer, so i Wil like you to kindly help me out.👇👇 Muslims across the world are fasting from dawn to
dusk for the next month. Some fast in countries
where the sun is up for almost 24 hours.
The question now is :How do Muslims observe
Ramadan in places where
the sun does not set?”

ANSWER

Wa alaykum salaam Warahmatullāhi Wabarakātuh.

Beloved brother, may Allah reward you for your inquisitiveness and that of your friend.

But we encourage you to always answer people that ask you questions the answer to which you do not know saying: Allāhu A’alam, that is the position of the People of Knowledge and Insight.

Secondly, we want to draw your attention and the attention of others to the fact that some of the Ulamā especially Mālik dislike what is known as “Al-Fiqhu Al-Iftirādi”.

Our Shaykh in this era, the Morrocan Maliki Expert Shaykh Hasan Ibn Muhammad Al-Kattāni – hafidhahullāh – used to encourage against it.

What is meant by it is a situation where a student imagines a situation or just thinks of a possibility and then asks a question regarding it. A situation which is either not real or has not been experienced.

That may not be the case in this situation but its just a caution. May Allāh be with us.

The verdict of the Ulamā is that people who experience such a condition (people in the Polar circles) should observe the fast in accordance with what those closest to then who do not experience same observe.

The evidence for this is the Hadith where the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – explained the End of Time where the Dajjāl appears.

The Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – explained in the Hadith that in those days, some days will be as long as a week while some will be as long as a month. He – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – said:

ﺃَﺭْﺑَﻌُﻮﻥَ ﻳَﻮْﻣًﺎ ، ﻳَﻮْﻡٌ ﻛَﺴَﻨَﺔٍ ، ﻭَﻳَﻮْﻡٌ ﻛَﺸَﻬْﺮٍ ، ﻭَﻳَﻮْﻡٌ ﻛَﺠُﻤُﻌَﺔٍ ، ﻭَﺳَﺎﺋِﺮُ ﺃَﻳَّﺎﻣِﻪِ ﻛَﺄَﻳَّﺎﻣِﻜُﻢْ . ﻗُﻠْﻨَﺎ : ﻳَﺎ ﺭَﺳُﻮﻝَ ﺍﻟﻠَّﻪِ ، ﻓَﺬَﻟِﻚَ ﺍﻟْﻴَﻮْﻡُ ﺍﻟَّﺬِﻱ ﻛَﺴَﻨَﺔٍ ﺃَﺗَﻜْﻔِﻴﻨَﺎ ﻓِﻴﻪِ ﺻَﻠَﺎﺓُ ﻳَﻮْﻡٍ ؟ ﻗَﺎﻝَ : ﻟَﺎ ، ﺍﻗْﺪُﺭُﻭﺍ ﻟَﻪُ ﻗَﺪْﺭَﻩُ ‏) ﺭﻭﺍﻩ ﻣﺴﻠﻢ
“Forty days: a day will be like a year, a day like a month, a day like a week and the other days like your regular days. We said: ‘O Messenger of Allah’, that day which will be like a year, does it suffice us in it the Salāt of a single day?’ He said: No, you should estimate and extrapolate for it.”

Recorded by Imām Muslim in his Sahih.

If that will be done for the Salāt, then that it should be done for the Fast is more deserving, and Allāh knows best.

Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran.
