#512: Ruling on Finding a Spouse on Social Media
QUESTION
” Assalamualeikum. Please what is the Islamic rules on finding your spouse on social media ?”
ANSWER
Wa ‘alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
Alhamdulillāh.
It must be known that one of the major Precepts upon which our Sharī’a is based is the Precept that says that “All means that lead to Harām are Harām and must be blocked”.
If that is understood, it would have become clear that initiating a discussion with the opposite sex without a reason or need is Harām.
It is upon this basis that the Shāfi’ī Imams held that it were not permissible for a Muslimah on the street to initiate Salām to a stranger Muslim, and it is not permissible for her to reply him if he were to initiate same. And that his initiating the salām to her is deemed a Dislike (Makrūh).
The Hanafī Imām and Polymath, Abū Sa’id Ahmad Al-Khādimī – rahimahullāh – said in his book ‘Al-Barīqatu Al-Mahmūdiyyah’ said:
“To speak to a Non-Relative Girl without need is not permissible because it may be a cause to Fitnah.”
When we look at what some youths do today of sending nude pictures to each other, peeping into the pictures of the opposite sex in very wrong intents, we realise the dangers that the restrictions of the Sharī’a were aimed at addressing and preventing.
Therefore, do not initiate a discussion with any opposite sex through the social media with the intention to get married. Try to seek other means of getting married that are Halāl , more trustworthy, and realistic from your community, your School and your associates.
We ask Allāh for guidance and direction, āmīn.
