Q&A (Fatwa)

#517: Can a Child be given more than One Name?

QUESTION

“Question. Can one name a child more than one Islamic names on the seven days…For instance Muhammad, at the same time Abdulkareem”

ANSWER

Wa alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.

Alhamdulillāh.

There is nothing authentically recorded from the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – that he forbade or disliked giving multiple names to a Child. The Ulamā have mentioned its permissibility.

Imām Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah – rahimahullāh – said in Tuhfatu Al-Muwdūd:

“And since the purpose behind naming is for identification and disambiguation, giving just one name suffices and sticking to one name achieves that purpose the more. But it is permissible to give more than one name such as giving a name, an epithet and then a Nick Name.”
