Q&A (Fatwa)

#526: Praying behind the man that does not say the Supplications after the Takbiratu al-Ihraam

QUESTION

” As salaam ‘alaykum wa rahmatullAah wabarakaatuh. I want about praying in jama’a (in congregation). *Is it permissible to pray behind someone or an imam who is FAST in his solaah and doesn’t recite the supplication to be said after the first Takbeer of Prayer* so as to enjoy the reward of praying in congregation? Correcting the person, he keeps saying “Ọlọhun a gbaa”…JazaakAllaahu khayran as you answer”

ANSWER

Wa alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.

Alhamdulillāh.

There is nothing wrong in such a Salāh as long as there is none of the Arkān (Pillars) of the Salāt that is disregarded as a result of his speed.

Composing the Arkān as was mentioned by Shaykh Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdilwahhāb, in Poetical lines, Abū Khallād Al-Hāfī said:

He mentioned 9 Arkān, the missing of any of which implies that the Salāt is unaccepted and must be repeated:

1. Takbiratu Al-Ihrām
2. Standing during the Takbiratu Al-Ihrām
3. Recitation of Sūratu Al-Fātihah
4. Rukū’
5. Rising from it
6. Sujūd on the seven bones
7. The sitting between the two Sujūd
8. The last Sitting for Tashahhud
9. The Taslīm

Imam Ibn Raslān Ash-Shāfi’ī – rahimahullāh – in Safwatu Az-Zubad mentioned 13, saying:

1. Intention
2. Standing for the capable
3. Takbiratu Al-Ihrām
4. Reciting the Fātihah
5. The Rukū’
6. Rising from the Rukū’
7 & 8. The Sujud
9. Sitting between the Sujūd
10. Sitting for the last Tashahhud
11. Tranquility in the Salāt
12. The Taslīm
13. Arranging the Arkān in their order

Ibn ‘Āshir Al-Mālikī – rahimahullāh – said in the Al-Murshidu Al-Mu’īn, mentioning 16:

1. Takbiratu Al-Ihrām
2. Standing for it
3. Niyyah
4. Recitation of the Fātihah
5. Standing for its recitation
6. Rukū’
7. Rising from the Rukū’
8. Sujūd
9. Khushū in Salāt

10. Rising from the Sujūd
11. Sitting for the Taslim
12. Taslim
13. Arranging the Arkān consecutively
14. Taking a while to balance the bones at every position change
15. Tranquility
16. The follower must follow strictly the Imām from Ihrām to Salām.

Therefore, if the speed of your Imām violates any of these pillars such as tranquility, balancing the joints at every position change and Khushū’, then there is no Salāh, otherwise, your Salāh is sound.

However, you have a right to choose the Masjid you attend. If therefore there is another mosque that you know has a more detailed Imām, then you are advised to make your prayers there.
