#541: Ruling on Supplement containing Red Wine

QUESTION

” Assalam ‘alaykum warahmatullAah wabarokaatuh
Ya ustaadh, IS RED WINE TOTALLY HARAAM?
I have a friend who drinks an energy supplement suggested for them in their gym class. The supplement has red wine extract. When I said something about red wine being haraam, he showed me a pdf certificate of Islamic Society of California listing some products that are halaal of which this product is there. He also said the supplement has halaal logo on it
Please enlighten me and my friend
JazaakAllahu khayran in advance.”

ANSWER

Wa alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.

Alhamdulillāh.

May Allāh enlighten us all with the Illumination of Guidance now and always, āmīn.

As for your question, then there are two matters raised in there.

The First: whether Red Wine was totally Harām.

As regards this, it is obligatory to know that the Causative Factor for the Forbiddance of any Wine is Intoxication.

In the Hadīth of ‘Abdullah Ibn ‘Umar – radiyallāhu ‘anhuma – that was recorded by Imām Muslim, the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – said:

وَكُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ حَرَامٌ.

“And every Intoxicant is Harām.”

And because what is most prevalent as an intoxicant is Alcohol, the same Hadīth referred every intoxicant as an Alcohol :

كُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ خَمْرٌ

“Every Intoxicant is Alcohol.”

This is why the ‘Ulamā are at a consensus that every drink that intoxicates is Harām regardless of what it is made with.

Red wines are usually made from Grapes and the redness in it is said to be as a result of its sugar converted to alcohol with respect to its degree of ripeness.

Whereas there has been manufactured Red Wines that are non-alcoholic and do not intoxicate, such wines are rare, and Allāh knows best.

The Second: Whether your Friend’s supplement is deemed Halāl if it contains Red Wine.

This is a matter of Fiqh concerning the said supplement and the metres used by the Society that graded it Halāl. We are incapable of commenting on that for the fact that we have no access to the supplement in question and have no clue as to the ingredients used, and if Red Wine was used, which kind of it.

We ask Allāh for thorough understanding, āmīn.

Bārakallāhu fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran
