#556: Ruling on Fasting the Month of Rajab

QUESTION

“Assalamu alaikum warhamatullah wabarakatuhu… Can we fast in the month of Rajab?”

ANSWER

Wa alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.

Alhamdulillāh.

Know, may Allāh be merciful on me and you, that nothing has been specifically recorded from the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – encouraging observing the Fast in the month of Rajab, nor stating its merits.

This implies that what is popular in our communities today as Rajab Fast, the Fast of the Elderly, is an Innovation fabricated into the Dīn.

Fasting in the month of Rajab therefore is given a merit equal to the generality of merits given to observing the fast in any other Sacred Month.

Bārakallāhu fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran

16th Rajab 1439AH.
