Q&A (Fatwa)

#57. RINSING THE MOUTH AFTER THE WUDHU

Pls what’s the ruling of putting water in the mouth or rinsing the mouth with water after performing the Ablution or after performing Ablution”

ANSWER

Alhamdulillaah, we ask Allah to reward you for your inquisitivity.

There is nothing authentically reported from the Rasul – salallaahu alayhi wasallam – or from any of the Sahaabah on this tradition that people do of washing/rinsing the mouth after the wudhu.

Rather, what is known is that it is the choice of some of the people of knowledge that they predated to ensure that their mouths were completely free of anything before they observed the Salaat. They would therefore, after the wudhu, clean again thoroughly their mouths and ensure it was clean.

Therefore, we say that there is no need engaging in this practice as long as one has not done anything necessitating the re-rinsing of the mouth after wudhu has been completed.

Jazaakumullaahu khayran.
